how it’s going at goldfish: three-month review

Mar 12, 2020

As most of you know, about three months ago, Ivy started swim lessons at Goldfish Swim School in Roscoe Village. I was so excited going into it, as Ivy has loved all of her previous swimming experiences. Little did we know, this was going to be a whole new ballgame for Ivy.

She was curious the first time we went, looking at everything with interest, wanting to go check out the pool, but one major change was the fact that I was not going in the pool with her. Needless to say, her first lesson did not go that well, and was more crying and freaking out than swimming. What made this rough start so much better, though, was the patience and understanding from the Goldfish staff. They assured me this was not abnormal and that it would get better over time.

The next few lessons continued to be difficult– lots of crying and mommy having to stay out of sight to help Ivy not want to escape from the pool. Goldfish gave us some pamphlets on swimming anxiety and tips to help prepare Ivy and keep her calm for lessons.

Time has progressed, and while lessons are still not the easiest, they have gotten better and we are continually encouraged by Ivy’s progress and her teacher’s reports. We’re hoping that by month six, Ivy will be much more comfortable with her swim lessons and truly start enjoying what she’s doing and learning. Right now she is working on flutter kicks and going under the water!

If you have a little one you are interested in signing up for swim lessons, I highly recommend Goldfish Swim Schools. They have dozens of locations, many of which are right here in the Chicago area. The atmosphere is fun, welcoming, and exciting. The staff is kind, patient, and friendly! It has made what could’ve been a very bad experience, a much better one.

With Spring Break around the corner, I’m glad that we have a fun activity that we can also do as a family since we are doing a stay-cation this year! Goldfish has Family Swim times everyday when the whole family can join their little swimmer in the water. It would also be the perfect time to go check out your Goldfish location and give it a try!
