a guide to the best Chicago Farmers Markets

Jun 1, 2024

Friends!! It’s officially FARMERS MARKET SEASON! As the weather warms up and the days get longer, it’s the perfect time to explore the vibrant farmers markets that Chicago has to offer. These markets are not just about fresh produce— they’re community gatherings where you can connect with and get to know local farmers, artisans, and fellow Chicagoans. I’m highlighting three of my favorite farmers markets in the city: Green City Market, Logan Square Farmers Market, and Portage Park Farmers Market— plus there’s a full list of all of Chicago’s farmers markets, too!

Green City Market | Lincoln Park

If you’re looking for a market that epitomizes the best of Chicago, Green City Market in Lincoln Park is the place to be. This iconic market is open year-round, but the outdoor season from May to October is when it truly shines. Situated in the scenic Lincoln Park, near the zoo, this market is a quintessential spring and summer icon.

From organic vegetables to pasture-raised meats, Green City Market prides itself on promoting sustainable practices. You’ll find everything from fresh herbs and heirloom tomatoes to artisanal cheeses and baked goods. One of my favorite things about this market is the chef demos. Local chefs share their culinary secrets and whip up delicious dishes using market ingredients. It’s a great way to get inspired and learn how to make the most of your fresh finds.

For the kiddos, there’s a kids’ table with fun activities and educational programs. Plus, the nearby park and iconic Lincoln Park Zoo make it a perfect family outing. Pro tip: Arrive early to snag the best produce and avoid the crowds!

Location: 1817 N Clark St | Chicago
Date: Wednesdays & Saturdays, May-October
Time: 9AM-1PM

Logan Square Farmers Market

Nestled in the heart of Logan Square, this market is a beloved community staple. Open on Sundays from May through October, the Logan Square Farmers Market transforms Logan Boulevard into a bustling hub of activity. The market also has a new location this year to make the market more accessible!

There’s so many amazing vendors at the Logan Square market. You’ll find an array of fresh produce, but also unique offerings like vegan pastries, handmade soaps, and locally roasted coffee. The market is known for its diverse selection of food trucks, serving up everything from gourmet grilled cheese to authentic Mexican street food. It’s a foodie’s paradise!

Music is another highlight here. Local musicians often perform live, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. Bring a blanket, grab some snacks, and enjoy a little picnic while listening to the tunes. It’s a great way to spend a Sunday morning with the family.

Location: N. Kedzie Boulevard from W. Logan Blvd. to Fullerton Ave.
Date: Sundays, May-October
Time: 9AM-3PM

Portage Park Farmers Market

Last but not least, let’s head over to the Northwest Side to explore the Portage Park Farmers Market. This market may not be as well-known as the others, but it’s a true hidden gem. Held on select Sundays from June through October, this market is a delightful blend of fresh produce, homemade goods, and community spirit.

Located in the heart of Portage Park, this market features a variety of vendors offering everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to artisanal breads and jams. One of the standout features is the market’s emphasis on local artisans. You’ll find beautiful handcrafted items like jewelry, candles, and even pet treats!

The market also hosts family-friendly activities, such as face painting, storytime, and crafts, making it a hit with the little ones. The laid-back atmosphere and friendly vendors make it a welcoming space for everyone.
