Hello, lovlies! Chicago comes alive in the summer (hello Summertime Chi!), and there’s no better time to explore this vibrant city. From sun-soaked days at the beach to unique adventures that make for unforgettable memories, here are my top picks for experiencing summertime Chi, whether you’re exploring solo, with the fam, or with your pals. Let’s go!
1. Splash Around at Maggie Daley Park
Start your summer fun with a visit to Maggie Daley Park. The kids will adore the whimsical playgrounds, and the family-friendly climbing walls offer a bit of adventure for older children. Don’t forget to pack a picnic and enjoy lunch with a view of Lake Michigan. This park is perfect for a day of family bonding and outdoor fun.
2. Cruise Along the Chicago River with Wendella
Hop on an architectural boat tour along the Chicago River. These tours are both educational and entertaining, offering stunning views of the city’s iconic skyline. For a unique twist, try an evening tour when the buildings light up, adding a magical touch to the experience.
3. Hit the lakefront Beaches
Chicago’s beaches are a summertime staple. North Avenue Beach is bustling with activity, from volleyball games to paddleboard rentals. For a more relaxed vibe, head to Foster Beach. Pack your beach bag with sunscreen, snacks, and plenty of water, and let the kids build sandcastles while you soak up the sun.
4. Discover the Garfield Park Conservatory
Escape the heat and step into the lush, green world of the Garfield Park Conservatory. This hidden gem is home to exotic plants and beautiful floral displays. The indoor gardens are a cool retreat, and the outdoor gardens offer plenty of space for the kids to explore. It’s a great way to introduce little ones to the wonders of nature.
5. Take a Stroll Through Lincoln Park Zoo
Lincoln Park Zoo is a must-visit, especially since it’s FREE! The zoo offers a wide variety of animals, a lovely carousel, and a charming children’s zoo. The nearby Nature Boardwalk and South Pond is perfect for a peaceful family walk, where you can spot native wildlife and enjoy the beautiful Chicago skyline.
6. Explore the Museum of Science and Industry
The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is a wonderland for curious minds. From the mesmerizing tornado exhibit to the U-505 Submarine, there’s something to captivate every family member. Don’t miss the outdoor Science Storms exhibit, where you can experience hands-on weather phenomena. Currently, you can see the 007 Exhibit about the science behind the James Bond films— it was SO cool!
7. Enjoy a Family Bike Ride Along the Lakefront Trail
Rent bikes and ride along the Lakefront Trail. The 18-mile path offers breathtaking views of the city and the lake. It’s a perfect way to get some exercise and enjoy the fresh air. Stop by one of the many parks along the way for a break and a quick play session. I highly recommend renting a Divvy bike if you don’t have one of your own!
8. Experience a Summer Festival
Chicago’s summer festivals are legendary. From the Taste of Chicago to neighborhood street fairs, there’s always something happening. Check out the family-friendly events at Millennium Park, where you can enjoy live music, movies in the park, and interactive art installations. Some of my favorites include: Southport Art Fest, Roscoe Village Burger Fest, Sundays on State, Windy City Smokeout, and, of course, Lollapalooza! There’s a festival somewhere in Chicago for everyone!
9. Have a Sweet Treat at Original Rainbow Cone
No summer is complete without a visit to Original Rainbow Cone. This iconic Chicago treat features layers of colorful ice cream flavors that are sure to delight the kids. It’s a delicious way to cool down after a day of exploring. They have a new location in Wicker Park, a spot on Navy Pier, and a truck outside the Lincoln Park Zoo!
10. Watch the Fireworks at Navy Pier
Cap off your summer adventures with a spectacular fireworks show at Navy Pier. Every Wednesday and Saturday night, the sky lights up with a dazzling display. Arrive early to enjoy the rides, grab some food, and find a cozy spot to watch the fireworks with the family.
11. Catching a Cubs game at Wrigley Field
And saving the best for last…nothing says summer in Chicago like a day at Wrigley Field. Take the family out to a Cubs game and experience the excitement of America’s favorite pastime. The energy in the stadium is infectious, and there are plenty of kid-friendly activities (definitely check out Gallagher Way) and food options. Don’t forget to snap a family photo under the iconic Wrigley Field marquee! Here is a post full of tips for taking your family to Wrigley!
Chicago is bursting with family-friendly activities that make summer truly special. Get out there, create wonderful memories, and enjoy all the fun this city has to offer. Happy summer, Windy City families! 🌞
Until next time my friends!
