32-week baby check-up

Aug 14, 2019

Hi all,

I just wanted to give you all a quick check-in after having my 32-week baby appointment. I mentioned in an Insta post a few weeks ago that I had been having a few health concerns, and unfortunately, we are still dealing with them. Thankfully, Isla is doing GREAT. We had an ultrasound today and she is measuring on target and everything appears to perfect as far as baby goes.

In regards to my health concerns, in the middle/end of my 2nd trimester, I started getting elevated resting heart rates and episodes of palpitations, which I also had with my first pregnancy and they turned out to be nothing of concern, so I wasn’t too worried, initially. But, this time they proceeded to get worse and my OB ultimately decided to refer me to a cardiologist. While meeting with the cardiologist, she discovered I had a heart murmur, also very common for pregnant women to develop. To be safe, I wore a heart monitor 24/7 for two weeks and had a scan of my heart to make sure everything was functioning correctly. The scan came back fine, and it was concluded the murmur was, indeed, due to the increase in blood my heart was pumping because of my pregnancy.

My cardiologist and OB were able to look at the results from the heart monitor and we concluded today at my 32-week appointment that I needed to start some daily medication to help the episodes of increased heart rates and palpitations. Hopefully, this will help stop the episodes, as they have grown increasingly worse and are mostly unbearable at times (like a panic attack while a work-out weight is sitting on your chest).

This appointment was also the first of my weekly NST (non-stress test) that monitor the baby for about a half-hour to watch for decreased fetal movement and heart rate levels. I will get these tests weekly until I deliver. I had to do this during my first pregnancy, as well. Like I mentioned in my 20-week blog post, I am a type-1 diabetic, therefore all of my pregnancies are considered “high risk” and cause me to receive extra monitoring even though I have extremely good control of my T1D.

I’m extremely thankful that I see such a great medical team and am continuing to stay optimistic about everything. So to recap, I’m hanging in there and baby is PERFECT! Ivy came along with us to the appointments today and was making everyone laugh and smile. Her presence has been requested next week, as well (LOL). We’ll see about that!

Have a beautiful day, everyone!
